Take the First Step
Getting Started with Dental Care
Whether you need a routine checkup, treatment for a toothache, or help finding affordable dental care, you're in the right place.
Everyone deserves access to quality oral health care, and we're here to help. Read the steps below to get started finding a provider that meets your needs.
Understand Your Payment Options
Before scheduling your appointment, take a few minutes to understand how you'll pay for your care.
Knowing your dental benefits can help you avoid unexpected costs and make it easier to find the right provider.
Covered services can vary depending on whether you have private dental insurance, MO HealthNet (Missouri Medicaid), or a Managed Care health plan.
No matter what type of coverage you have:
- Check your benefits before scheduling.
- Make sure your dentist accepts your plan.
- Ask about expected costs before treatment begins.
- Ask whether any procedures require prior approval.
If you're unsure about your coverage or payment options, call the dental office before your appointment. They can often answer your questions and help you understand what to expect.
MO HealthNet and Managed Care Plans
Missouri Medicaid provides dental benefits for eligible children and adults through MO HealthNet and Managed Care Plans. Covered services depend on your age and eligibility category.
Missouri Managed Care plans include:
Before your appointment:
- Confirm that your MO HealthNet/Managed Care Plan benefit status is active.
- Verify whether you're enrolled in Fee-for-Service or a Managed Care plan.
- Find a dentist who accepts your coverage.
- Contact Participant Services if you have questions.
You can review your benefits by logging in to your MO HealthNet account, or by contacting the MO HealthNet Participant Services Unit at (800) 392-2161.
If you're enrolled in a Managed Care plan, contact your health plan with any questions you have about covered services.
Private Dental Insurance
Most employer-sponsored and individual dental plans cover preventive care, such as exams, cleanings, and X-rays. Other services, including fillings, crowns, root canals, and dentures, may require cost-sharing or have annual coverage limits. Each plan’s coverage varies, so it’s important to review your benefits before your next appointment. This can be done by logging into your insurance providers patient portal, or by contacting the plan directly to review your coverage with a member services representative.
Alternative Payment Methods
Some practices offer other ways to pay for those who are not covered by Medicaid or private insurance. Common options include:
- Sliding-fee discounts
- Payment plans
- Self-pay pricing
- Donated dental services (if available)
If you plan to use an alternative payment method, call the dental office beforehand to ensure you qualify and understand your responsibilities.
Find the Right Provider
Your dentist is an important partner in keeping your mouth healthy. Finding the right provider can make it easier to get the care you need now and in the future.
Before scheduling, make sure the office:
- Is accepting new patients
- Accepts your insurance or payment method
- Can meet any accessibility or communication needs you have
- Has office locations and hours that are convenient for you
Ask Questions
When looking at potential new providers, check that they’re a good fit for you by asking a few questions:
- What will my first visit cost?
- Do you offer payment plans?
- Do you provide interpreter services?
- Is your office wheelchair accessible?
- What should I bring to my appointment?
- How soon can I be seen?
Your First Visit
Your first appointment is a chance to build a relationship with your dental team. Don't hesitate to ask questions, share concerns, or let the office know if you have anxiety, accessibility needs, or require accommodations.
Your dentist and dental staff are there to help you feel comfortable and support your oral health every step of the way.
