Protecting Missouri’s Children Through School-Based Dental Sealants

Jun 7, 2026

No child should have to suffer the pain, distraction, and missed opportunities caused by preventable tooth decay. Yet far too many children still do. Cavities can lead to pain, infection, lost classroom time, and costly treatment that places added strain on families. We have the tools to prevent much of this harm. By acting early, we can protect children’s health, support their success in school, and reduce avoidable costs for families and communities alike.

Dental sealants are one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent cavities before they start. These thin protective coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where decay most often begins. Sealants are typically placed when children’s permanent molars come in—around ages 6 or 7, and again around 12 or 13. They protect healthy teeth, can stop early decay from progressing, and cost far less than fillings or more extensive treatment. In short, sealants work—and they save money.

For many children, school-based dental programs are the most practical and reliable way to receive this care. Schools are trusted community institutions, and providing sealants at or through schools removes barriers that too often keep children from getting preventive services. These programs are especially critical in communities where many families face limited access to regular dental care. When we bring care to children, we create a fairer and more effective path to better health.

In Missouri, school-based services help dental hygienists deliver sealants to children who might otherwise go without them. Some programs use portable equipment at schools, while others begin with screenings at school and provide sealants later in a dental office or community clinic. Although program models vary, the mission is the same: make proven preventive care easier to reach. Expanding access to sealants can reduce the millions of school hours children miss each year because of dental problems and help more children stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn.

Sealant programs may differ from one community to another, but their purpose is clear: to stop preventable dental problems before they become painful, costly, and harder to treat. That is a goal every community should be able to support.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up with a healthy smile and a fair opportunity to succeed. When children are screened for dental risk and offered sealants when appropriate, families benefit, schools benefit, and entire communities benefit. Prevention is not only good health policy—it is a practical promise we make to children and the future we want for them.

The Missouri Coalition for Oral Health supports dental sealants because they are a practical, affordable, and proven way to protect children from tooth decay. Offering sealants through local schools can help more children avoid pain, miss fewer days of school, and receive care before problems become more serious and more expensive. When we invest in children’s oral health, we strengthen families, support learning, and build healthier communities for generations to come.

Now is the time for policymakers, educators, health professionals, and community leaders to act. Missouri should expand access to school-based dental sealant programs and support policies that remove barriers to preventive care, strengthen public health partnerships, and invest in children’s long-term well-being. A strong public commitment to prevention will help ensure that every child—regardless of income or circumstance—has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
